From Expert to Leader: Seven Practices for First-Time Managers
You were promoted because you were excellent at your job. Now your job is different: success is measured by what your team achieves. These seven practices make the transition smoother.
- Hold a listening tour. Meet every team member individually in your first two weeks. Ask what is working, what is not, and how they like to be managed.
- Set clear expectations. Ambiguity is the biggest source of team friction. Agree on goals, priorities, standards and how decisions will be made.
- Protect regular one-on-ones. A consistent 30-minute conversation every week or two is the single most effective management habit.
- Give feedback early and specifically. Describe the situation, the behavior and the impact. Praise in public, correct in private.
- Delegate outcomes, not tasks. Explain the result you need and why it matters, then let people own the how.
- Make it safe to speak up. Thank people for raising problems. Teams with high psychological safety learn faster and make fewer costly mistakes.
- Manage your own transition. Find a mentor, keep learning and resist the urge to do the team's work yourself.
