Internal Auditor vs. Lead Auditor: Understanding the ISO Auditing Career Path

Management system auditing is one of the most portable careers in business. The same skills apply in manufacturing, healthcare, construction, technology and government, and in almost every country. Most auditors start in one of two roles.

The internal auditor

Internal auditors examine their own organization's management system against a standard such as ISO 9001, ISO 14001 or ISO 45001. They plan audits of individual processes, interview colleagues, review records and report findings that drive improvement. It is an excellent first step, and internal audit experience is highly valued by employers.

The lead auditor

Lead auditors plan and lead complete audits, often as part of a certification body or as an independent second-party auditor of suppliers. They manage an audit team, run opening and closing meetings, make judgments on the severity of nonconformities and sign off on the final report. The role requires deeper knowledge of the standard, of ISO 19011 audit guidance and of certification practice, along with strong leadership and communication skills.

A typical progression

  1. Learn the standard: a foundations or awareness course.
  2. Become an internal auditor and gain hands-on audit experience.
  3. Complete lead auditor training.
  4. Build logged audit days, often under supervision, toward professional registration where required.
  5. Add further standards, such as quality, environment, safety, energy and information security, to become an integrated management system auditor.

Skills that set great auditors apart

  • Curiosity and the ability to follow the evidence.
  • Clear, neutral writing.
  • Calm, respectful questioning that puts people at ease.
  • Commercial judgment about what really matters to the business.
