Why ISO/IEC 27001 Matters to Every Business, Not Just IT

Clients, partners and regulators increasingly ask the same question: how do you protect our information? ISO/IEC 27001 is the internationally recognized answer.

It is a management system, not a software product

ISO/IEC 27001 defines how an organization establishes, operates and continually improves an Information Security Management System (ISMS). It starts with understanding your context and risks, then selecting proportionate controls. The 2022 edition organizes its Annex A reference controls into four themes: organizational, people, physical and technological.

Why leadership should care

  • Winning business: certification is often a prerequisite in tenders and enterprise contracts.
  • Reducing risk: a structured approach lowers the likelihood and impact of incidents.
  • Building trust: it gives clients independent assurance about how their data is handled.
  • Supporting compliance: it provides a framework that aligns well with data protection obligations.

Getting started

  1. Secure leadership commitment and define the scope.
  2. Identify information assets and assess risks.
  3. Select and implement controls and prepare a Statement of Applicability.
  4. Train people, because most incidents involve human factors.
  5. Audit, review and improve.
